8-Day East Himalaya Explorer

Day 1Arrival at Bagdogra – Transfer to Darjeeling (100 km / approx. 3 hrs)

Upon arrival at Bagdogra Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative who will assist you throughout your journey. Begin your scenic drive to the charming hill station of Darjeeling, nestled at an altitude of 7,000 feet. Enjoy the refreshing mountain air as you arrive and settle into your hotel.

Day 2Darjeeling – Sunrise, Monasteries & Tea Gardens

Start early with a trip to Tiger Hill (altitude 8,500 ft) to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the majestic snow-capped Kanchenjunga peak (8,598 m), the world’s third highest mountain. On your way back, visit the historic Ghoom Monastery (established 1875), a spiritual landmark of the region.

Experience a nostalgic Toy Train ride from Ghoom to Darjeeling, passing through lush tea gardens. After breakfast, explore the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, the Tibetan Refugee Camp, and the bustling local market. Post-lunch, visit the Darjeeling Museum, the serene Botanical Gardens, and wander through verdant tea estates that give the town its unique charm.

Day 3Darjeeling to Pelling (115 km / approx. 3 hrs)

Travel onwards to Pelling, a serene hill town renowned for its panoramic Himalayan views. Check into your hotel before embarking on a sightseeing tour including the sacred Pemyangtse Monastery, the ancient ruins of Rabdentse Palace, the spiritual Sangacheoling Monastery, the tranquil Khecheopalri Lake, and the thrilling Singshore Bridge, one of the highest suspension bridges in Asia.

Day 4Pelling to Gangtok (130 km / approx. 4 hrs)

After breakfast, proceed to Gangtok, the vibrant capital of Sikkim perched on a ridge overlooking the Ranipul River. Gangtok, meaning ‘High Hill’, is famous for its stunning Himalayan panorama, rhododendron blooms, orchids, rare butterflies, and the elusive red panda. It is also a melting pot of ethnic cultures and exquisite cuisine. Arrive and check into your hotel for a comfortable overnight stay.

Day 5Exploring Gangtok – Wildlife, Culture & Crafts

Visit the Himalayan Zoological Park (Bulbuley), home to rare species such as the red panda, barking deer, and Himalayan black bear, all in a semi-natural habitat. Next, explore the Government Institute of Cottage Industries (GICI) where traditional Sikkimese crafts flourish — from handwoven Tibetan carpets dyed naturally to intricately carved and painted Choktse tables.

Later, wander through the colorful Lal Bazaar, a lively marketplace where local ethnic groups barter and socialize. Complete the day at the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, a treasure trove of Tibetan manuscripts and one of the world’s foremost centers for Buddhist research.

Day 6Gangtok to Kalimpong (90 km / approx. 3 hrs)

Drive to Kalimpong, a picturesque town set against the towering snow-capped peaks. Known for its rich cultural blend and numerous Buddhist monasteries, Kalimpong reflects a harmonious coexistence of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Christianity.

Visit the ancient Thongsa Gompa (Bhutanese Monastery), founded in 1692 and rebuilt after destruction. Explore Zong Dog Palri Fo-Brang Gompa on Durpin Hill, famous for its exquisite Tibetan murals and religious debating society. Discover Tharpa Choeling Monastery (founded 1937), home to rare scriptures and literary works of the Gelugpa sect. Also visit Dr. Graham’s Home, a historic mission school established in 1900, dedicated to educating children of tea garden workers.

Day 7Kalimpong Excursion – The Serene Village of Lava (40 km / approx. 1 hr)

Take a day trip to Lava, a quaint village nestled amidst dense forests and stunning natural beauty. This haven for trekkers, hikers, and nature lovers offers pristine trails, abundant wildlife including black bears and barking deer, and is a paradise for bird watchers spotting rare migratory species such as the rusty-bellied shortwing and blue robin.

Visit the old Buddhist monastery hidden in the hills and enjoy leisurely picnics at scenic spots surrounded by untouched forests and tranquil landscapes. Experience the warm hospitality of the local community preserving their traditional way of life.

Day 8Departure – Kalimpong to Bagdogra Airport (65 km / approx. 1.5 hrs)

After breakfast, transfer to Bagdogra Airport for your onward flight. Bid farewell to the mesmerizing Eastern Himalayas, taking with you memories of pristine mountains, rich culture, and warm hospitality.
